Volvo B18/B20 intake carburetors, specifically the DGAV downdraft type (Volvo part number 5881003), are commonly found in Volvo cars from the 1960s to the 1980s. Here are the pros and cons of buying and rebuilding one for your Volvo:
Pros:1. Authenticity: Original carburetors maintain the car's originality, which can be essential for collectors and enthusiasts.
2. Cost-effective: Rebuilding your existing carburetor can be more cost-effective than purchasing a new one, especially if the carburetor is in good condition.
3. Performance: A properly rebuilt carburetor can provide better fuel economy and improved engine performance.
4. Availability: These carburetors are relatively easy to find on the aftermarket, both new and used.
Cons:1. Complexity: Rebuilding a carburetor can be a time-consuming and complex process, requiring specialized tools and knowledge.
2. Cost: The cost of rebuilding a carburetor can be significant, especially if you need to purchase new parts or hire a professional.
3. Compatibility: There are different variations of the B18/B20 intake carburetors, so it is crucial to ensure that the one you purchase is compatible with your specific Volvo model and engine configuration.
4. Wear and tear: Even a newly rebuilt carburetor can wear out over time, depending on the condition of the parts used and the driving conditions.
Ending conclusion:Rebuilding a Volvo B18/B20 DGAV downdraft carburetor can be a worthwhile investment for those who value originality, cost-effectiveness, and improved engine performance. However, it requires a significant time commitment, specialized knowledge, and potential costs. If you are not confident in your ability to rebuild the carburetor yourself, consider hiring a professional or purchasing a rebuilt or new carburetor from a reputable source.
Recommendation:If you decide to rebuild the carburetor yourself, invest in a comprehensive rebuild kit, high-quality gaskets, and accurate rebuild instructions. Ensure that you have all the necessary tools and resources before starting the project. If you are unsure about your abilities, consider seeking help from a professional or joining a Volvo enthusiast club for advice and support.
All of the parts and screws that I tried seem to move freely. Used IPD vintage Volvo B18 / B20 Weber downdraft carb and intake manifold. The choke cover is loose. The manifold is in decent shape and just needs a good cleaning.
Nothing appears to be bent or broken. It needs rebuilding or use for parts. The numbers stamped into the base plate are 32/36 DGAV 33A 02283. The intake manifold has part number Volvo 5881003 cast into it.
The Weber downdraft is made in Italy. There is an IPD tag, serial number 514 riveted to it.
